Morning weight: 136 lbs.

A sad, sad, sad, sad day. I had a bone scan done this morning, and the radiologist says I have a stress fracture on my left shin. Surprisingly, he said the right shin, which hurt the most, is only shin splints. I've been reading lots about stress fractures and unlike shin splints, everything I read says there's no way around it: not running is the only option. I made a follow-up appointment w/my orthopaedic surgeon to see how long he suggests I rest it.

So now the question is, what do I do? I know I can do pool running, maybe biking, and keep my cardio rate up. Can I still run a BQ marathon before the deadline? All answers that I'll need to figure out soon.

Thanks for reading, and I'll run vicariously through you all.

----------

Biked to bicycle maintenance class, 14 miles, then to the metro, 2, then home, 2 = 18 miles.

Sorry to hear about the stress fracture. No running is the only option to let it heal fully. As far as the BQ, you have until about February to get one, so see how it is healing up after about 6 weeks of rest then start slowly back into training and see if you can target a January timeframe marathon (something like PF Chang Rock N Roll marathon in Phoenix).

Hope you have a speedy and full recovery.

So sorry to hear. I would crosstrain like a mad woman. And find out why you are getting these shin splints. You may need orthotics (but make sure you see someone who works on athletes). But it seems like you have had them for a long time and may need some help getting over them and staying over them. It is probably a good sign that your one with the stress facture doesn't hurt as much it probably means it is on the mend. Hang in there and ther will always be a BQer race. Get healthy and then worry about that.

I'm so sorry to hear about your stress fracture. Make sure you take the time to heal to 100% so that you can get back to running. I'm sure you will be able to get a BQer!

I am so sorry to hear about your stress fracture. One thing that i have found that will help you is the elliptical. That helped me with my shin splints. So when you see the doctor ask if you can use it. Just look at it like this "It is just a bump in the road and i am going to get through this." That is what I had to told myself and it helped me.

Oh no Lucia! That is terrible. I'm sooooo sorry that this is happening to you. Just do what the doctor says so we can go running together again. I miss my Thursday/Friday running buddy! :)

That is such sad news! I hope heals quickly! There are a lot of people having to do some cross training on the blog so I'm sure you will get some great ideas from them. Could this be the answer to your school question? Maybe it will be time to finish that class after all! Good luck! Keep on blogging!

From luzylew on Mon, Aug 04, 2008 at 23:04:36

Oh Lucia! I am so sorry for you. But you will heal. I'm contemplating what it's like to not run right now myself because of a nasty tendonitis that I can't shake. I'm so sorry about the fracture, but at least now you know and can do something about healing it. I was really looking forward to meeting you for a run here in DC (I just got here). But maybe a bikeride instead? Take good care.

Lucia, I am so sorry to hear about the stress fracture. You have a great attitude about it, though, and that's half the battle. My husband might have one also, and he has been riding the stationary bike and going to spinning classes. I would also check out Benn's blog, aka Howling Commando. He bought a bike and is up to 60+ miles at a time.

And, PF Chang's as your BQ is a GREAT idea! That is my target BQ race, and it would be great to meet you!

Keep your chin up! And congrats on the weight loss!
