Ran in to work in the morning. Got new shoes last night, some Asics again... I get calluses right where the big toe starts, where bunions would form, but other than that I like the shoes a lot. I'll try wearing those, maybe putting on some moleskin to see if it helps with the calluses, and hope that the new shoes will help with the shin splints...

On a personal note, though I am very happy about being able to run as much as I have been lately without much effort, I haven't been able to keep my eating habits under control, and that is very frustrating. I am disappointed at myself! Why is it so easy for me to exercise, bike, run, etc., but I can't get my eating under control? I have no desire to drink alcohol, eat greasy food or meat, but I just can't say no to sweets, candy bars, cookies... and there are a lot around at work and in the house... I am generally a pretty healthy eater - I'm a vegetarian, I eat a lot of good cereal, grains, beans, tofu, eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables... but I get tempted very easily when my office mates eat junk food, and also when I come home and my roommate makes good desserts...  I'm an emotional eater mainly, and I've been busy and a bit stressed lately about work and school and life in general. I need to learn to not eat when I feel stressed! Currently I am 140 lbs, and for a 5'7.5" big-boned girl that is not unhealthy or anything, but I know if I want to run faster, losing 10-15 lbs. will help my knees work a lot better, and it will make me feel better too! Ok, no more ramblings on that... sharing makes the problem more real and makes me more responsible for my actions...

I plan on running around here another 5 miles this afternoon, or run back home. It's a nice day here in DC.

Ran back home after work, in the pouring rain - a bit faster this time, but still with backpack so not very fast

I have the exact same food issues - Work is the absolute worst for me. Junk, eating out, friends - it never ends well. What is interesting is we are built almost exactly the same, I am just 5 lbs heavier. I need to be stronger - it is the peer pressure everytime.

From Lori on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 10:00:32

I can really relate to the eating issues. I don't have to much trouble at work, but after I get home is my big trouble time. I'm usually hungery and I'm trying to get dinner ready for the family. My family (Husband, kids) are big junk food junkies. I try to get my husband not to buy so many sweets/ice cream but after 28 years of marriage it is just not going to happen. Some days I'm good, but most of the time I'm not. I'm older and a bit bigger/taller then both of you. 5'9 about 158-160. Like you said I know that I would be able to run better/fast and with out as much strain on my joints if I could loose 10-15lbs. Liek Jody said just need to be stronger!

From Maria on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 11:51:28

I'm with you, Lori! My husband keeps buying lots of meat (that I need to stay away from) and delicious pies, and ready-meals with lots of pastry (read "fat"). I'm not as tall as you girls, only 5'5", but I'm medium boned and I weigh 130-132 now, which is too much. I want to lose at least 5 lbs, but it's not easy at all!

From Lucia on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 11:55:22

Thank you for the comments, girls! It feels good to know I'm not alone on my struggle. We all are obviously in good shape and not "fat", but losing those last 5-15 lbs. to feel "perfect" seems to be the hardest thing, especially when everyone around us doesn't have the same concerns... Best of luck to all of you, and thank you for sharing your experiences! Let's be stronger!

Also I forgot to mention before that besides the weight loss, I feel very sluggish when I don't eat right. It makes such a difference during my runs when I've had only good food the day before or the same day I run. Otherwise my stomach feels heavy, or I'm burping or feeling abdominal pains... I will get this in control!

From Shauna on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 18:50:09

I have the same food weaknesses as you. It's hard to give up the sweets when you feel like you're eating so well the rest of the time, and running so much. I'm 5'8" and about 145 pounds or so, up from 135 last year, and I can tell the difference in my running. It's great to talk about this issue-hopefully it will help keep everyone accountable. You are doing great with your training!

Ok this is what I do when I get a craving for sweets (I love sweets but don't eat sugar). I go to my heath food store and buy healthy treats that are naturally sweetened and have no sugar. Also for me they have to be whole wheat or wheat free. Ok so these are not as good at first but over time you like them and get really sick if you eat the other stuff. Another thing is to make your own stuff with natural sweeters (like zylitol or stevia and there are others) and whole wheat (they make whole wheat for baking that is great). When you make stuff yourself you know what is going into it. This all does take some disapline but is well worth it.

I use to make bets with people when I wanted to go off sugar and I made them high stake bets.

Hey Lucia, Todo Bien! You are doing great, so don't search for perfection...focus on progress and making the day better than the one before! I can really relate! I find that when I stick to a meal plan ( a really well thought out plan that has enough calories and balance that I feel satisfied) I can more easily avoid the temptations. I have also made a new rule to only go out with friends twice a week, cause I know that going out makes me tired, and too quick to grab at crappy food. Also, I am 30, work for an Assn. and live in DC too! Funny how small the world is!
