Took the day off - biked to work from home, then to the metro from bike maintenance class, then home from L'Enfant Plaza metro, for a total of 8 biking miles for the day.

This week's plans are for a 55-60-mile week, and as suggested by many of you, a tempo/interval run during the week. My long run for this weekend should be 16-17 miles.

When I ran the Marine Corps marathon in 2006, I had a friend waiting for me at mile 13 with a banana. That worked out really well, I was hungry at about that time and it was just what I wanted. So I'm thinking about doing the same this year. One gel or jelly beans around mile 8, a banana around mile 13, then maybe two more gels or jelly beans spaced out, and gatorade and water throughout. I'll see if I can test some of it out during my long run this weekend. Anyone else out there eats solid food like a banana during marathons?

I don't know if I could get a banana down, but oranges are great. I have trouble with the gel's...they make me have to go. But gatorade alternated with water throughout helps. It's good to experiment on your long runs. I'll be in DC in a week or so and will be looking for a good 17-19 mile route. Blog where you take your long run. I've read there's a running group that meets at the IwoJima monument every morning, but I don't know if that's a tight-knit, hard-core group, or just a bunch of runners who meet up there. I'm looking forward to running at least one of the days around the monuments (early, very early in the morning to beat the heat). Good luck with the 60 miles this week. So far I've only been able to capture 57. It wasn't bad!

I have never had a banana during any run. I would suggest trying it out during a long run to make sure it doesn't give your stomach any trouble. Although, if it worked before, it will probably work again. I think your fueling plan sounds good, but I would start even earlier, around mile 5 or so. I usually end up taking about 4 gels during a marathon, plus sports drink and water.

Yeah, I pretty much have an iron stomach... but maybe now that I'm faster it'll be better to stick to gels and gatorade and water. Thanks for the tip, Shauna. You're right, it may be better to start earlier.

Luz, the DC Road Runners meets at the Iwo Jima memorial for their Saturday long runs at 7 a.m. - http://www.dcroadrunners.org/ I don't know which group meets there every day though. They're a fun group, mostly older runners but fast boys at heart. I was thinking of joining their SLR, so if you decide you want to do it, let me know. I have a couple of long run routes saved on mapmyrun.com; I'll send you an e-mail with the link, or maybe I can join you on the run for a bit.

Thanks Lucia. I'd love it if you'd forward me your mapped runs. I get there Aug 5 and stay through the 11th. My sister lives in Alexandria. It'd be fun to take a run with a fellow blogger! Or at least told where to run by a local. Also, my friend Amanda, who is moving to VA, is rounding up a group for the DC Ragnar in Sept. If you know of anyone interested, they are looking for 2 team mates...
