This was a great race - it was humid in the morning, but not too hot and cloudy, otherwise the sun would've killed me... It was pretty hilly but nothing too bad. Beautiful countryside, in the farmland of Maryland, starting at the C&O canal by Poolesville. I felt pretty good at the start, but apparentlly I started off too quickly because a lot of people kept passing me... I rarely passed anybody the entire race. Drove out there with my ultrarunner friend Bryon and his girlfriend Lindsay, we had a nice conversation on the way there. The miles weren't marked, as this is a very small race, but there were plenty of water/gatorade stops throughout with such nice volunteers! I was feeling pretty good, and at around 45 minutes Bryon came the other way looking strong and he gave me a hi-5. I hit the turnaround point at 53:50, still feeling good. Then ten minutes later I felt I was bonking... I had taken some gatorade but had decided up until then not to do gels, to do gatorade instead, but I'm not sure that was a good idea. My friend John saw me at around mile 9 and yelled out my name, that was nice and made me smile!

Then a few minutes later this beautiful girl looks at me and smiles, and I knew it was Jill! She looked great, but just coming out of a big hill, so she looked like she needed a hug - forgetting that I was completely drenched, I hugged her and kept going. She probably thinks I'm a nutcase, hahaha! Jill, if you're reading this, I must say your pictures don't do you justice! you looked amazing out there! And sorry I didn't see you cross the finish like, I was carpooling and couldn't miss my ride back home...

At the next aid station, around 1:10 I had one of my gus and some water. I still can't seem to get the fluids/gels thing right... I didn't want to drink too much, but yet my mouth was always dry. I had part of my second gel at 1:30 to see if it helped me feel a bit better. Had some cramps the last 2 miles or so, but nothing too bad. Lindsay and Bryon were cheering for me by the finish line, and I was done!

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't finish any faster than my previous PR (1:48:40), especially considering I hadn't really trained much before that one, but the hills were much larger this time, and the lonely countryside was a bit challenging mentally at times. But considering I didn't really taper or made this race a priority, and the fact that I haven't been sleeping well this past week, it was a good run. It's nice to know where I stand on my training. And I still have time to get faster, and I will!

----- Results are up: I was 17th girl out of 201, and 3rd out of 33 in my division!!! Not too shabby for me!

The HILLS were CRAZY! Lucia, it is a testament to your strength that you call the hills, Not too bad! I felt this was worse than any marathon I have ever run! :o) I was just off today - feeling funky! It was AWESOME seeing you! I was running so fast for a mile after I saw you! Congratulations!!!! You rocked it! You did great! I think you must have been in the top 15 women when I saw you. Rest and talk to you soon! Be so proud of yourself! You did better than what you were expecting!

ok, i entered the distance! I think I will do the leesburg 20k on Aug. 10. I am not too disapointed about today- it was a great workout!! My thighs have to be getting stronger, maybe even smaller! You were just awesome. The mcrrc web site has a funny picture from the race. I am going to take a nap! I hope you are not running again today! :o) Talk soon!

Great job and good race report! You beat your Short Term Running Goal of 1:50 in this race.

For the dry mouth, you can try chewing gum. I take a spare piece with me on a marathon. Not sure how well that would work with taking a gel though, since I don't use them.

Congrats again and keep up the good work, then you can meet the rest of your goals!

Congratulation, I think you did awesome. Have you tried taking sports beans for running? I use them in races and i love them. I usually take one every mile or more if needed. Something to think about. Anyway, good job.

Congratulations on meeting your goal for the race (and the PR) Lucia, keep up the positive spirit! You did run faster than your previous PR, and factoring in the hills I think you are underestimating this achievement!

From marion on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 18:32:02

Fantastic race! I am in awe! Great job and great time :) Way to break that PR!

Barry- I like to beans too. Do you think they are as good as the gu? The gu makes me...well... barf :(

From Kim on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 21:24:29

Not too shabby at all girl! Way to go! Tom use to always like to take some Jolly Ranchers with him on long runs. I think I will try taking some with me next time. I also need to try the bean thing everyone keeps talking about. I've never seen them and eating beans while running has never appealed to me. Maybe they are different than what I am thinking. Anyway...Great job and thanks for sharing a fun race report!

From marion on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 21:45:29

The beans are made by Jelly Belly. They are a bit bigger and taste a little mineral-ie

From Burt on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 21:52:22

Congratulations on the awesome race and the awesome time! You rock!

From Lucia on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 21:55:40

Thanks for the messages! I do like the jelly beans, I'll have to try that next time. Also maybe gum/jelly ranchers would be nice for a change. Awesome ideas, thank you!

From Walter on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 22:18:30

Very very nice my friend! You are an up and coming BQer! Pretty soon you will be "Lucia" at races. At the starting line you will hear people say thats lucia! Keep up the good work.

From Shauna on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 23:03:49

Yeah! Way to PR! You also ran identical splits. That's quite an accomplishment to not slow down at all in the second half. More great races are in store for you!

From marion on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 23:14:50

Jolly Ranchers are my FAVORITE! I have my water belt LOADED with them. I keep a HUGE bag in my closet for running :D My baby found it and I need to relocate my stash ;D

From Lucia on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 23:17:02

Marion, that's so funny! I didn't want to say anything... but the biggest reason why I don't take jelly beans or blocks on races is because I eat them as soon as I buy them!!!

From marion on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 23:43:18

I knew we were kindred spirits! :) That is one good thing about gu- it just sits on my dresser... FOREVER!!! (maybe my baby would eat that instead of my Jolly Ranchers? Naw.. he's too smart :)

Great race Lucia. 17th of 201 is fantastic! You're really getting fast with all your training!

Great race and nice PR on a tough course.

From josse on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 17:32:07

I totally missed this, it was my daughters bday so I didn't check the blog. Great job! These harder races are what build us mentally. And remind us to push alittle harder in the next race. Notice the places that you struggled in this one and work on those in the next. I tend to really struggle aroung 9-10.5 in halfs. If I focus really hard through that section it is over before I now it and I can focus on a strong finish. Anyway I think you are running great and headed for a great marathon. Keep it up:) BTW we all play the what if game. Try to pull out the positives.
