Six miles at lunch on the C&O Canal to Fletcher's. Can you say HOT AND MUGGY???

Finished in 52 mins, not too bad for a 91 degree day with 51% humidity. I picked up the pace to pass a girl on the way back... then got greedy and passed another girl. Then I was so tired I had to slow waaaay down. But I showed them! :)

Nine slow but nice miles along the mall and the tidal basin. Feeling a little tired but pretty good. Weather is a lot cooler (77) this morning. Switched my long run to tomorrow so the mileage this week is not that great, due to bad planning... I do need a recovery week though, so next week I'll take it easy too, tapering for a 20k race on Sunday.

Going on a 20-mile bike ride this afternoon followed by some hiking on the Billy Goat Trail!

GREAT run with Ashley this morning! Not as hot as it's been, about 77 when we started. I biked from home to Roosevelt Island (6 miles) to meet with Ashley, and we ran on the island, then the Mt. Vernon trail, across the Memorial Bridge, down to Haines Point and back around, back to Roosevelt Island - got some gu and went back out to the Key Bridge, down the Rock Creek Parkway, across the Memorial Bridge and back to the island again. First loop was 11 miles, second loop was 4, then I did 2 more after Ash was gone. I think it was a good run for many reasons: first, it wasn't as hot; second, I had my Nathan pack with water and 3 tablets of Nuun (electrolytes), and I was drinking the entire way. Third, Ashley is a lot slower than me so I had to slow down for her which was good. Fourth, I had some shot blocks around 1 hour after the start, and some jelly beans after another hour. It seemed like the perfect combination. The only thing that didn't go as well was my need to use the bathroom 2 times during the run. I need to figure out what to eat the night before to make sure that doesn't happen during the race...

After the run, I biked 6 miles home. Total for the weekend: 26 miles of running and 37 miles of biking.

I forgot to mention my morning weight today: 138 lbs! Three more and I'll feel pretty good already. Then 7 more after that and I'll be at my ideal weight. I can do it! I've been reading Marion's blog and it's really inspiring. The blog helps a lot too!

Morning weight: 136 lbs.

A sad, sad, sad, sad day. I had a bone scan done this morning, and the radiologist says I have a stress fracture on my left shin. Surprisingly, he said the right shin, which hurt the most, is only shin splints. I've been reading lots about stress fractures and unlike shin splints, everything I read says there's no way around it: not running is the only option. I made a follow-up appointment w/my orthopaedic surgeon to see how long he suggests I rest it.

So now the question is, what do I do? I know I can do pool running, maybe biking, and keep my cardio rate up. Can I still run a BQ marathon before the deadline? All answers that I'll need to figure out soon.

Thanks for reading, and I'll run vicariously through you all.

Biked to bicycle maintenance class, 14 miles, then to the metro, 2, then home, 2 = 18 miles.

Biked home from work, then went to the swimming pool for 1 hour of attempted aqua jogging... It's a lot harder than it seems. Thank goodness for DC's public pools that are free to DC residents!!!

Tomorrow I have my docs appointment, we'll see what he says. I got some great tips from all of you bloggers so I need to start reading and finding more about all your suggestions to aqua jog and cross train, etc.

Not good news from the doc. The bone scan shows shin splints on both legs, and a stress fracture on the left lower tibia. No running for 8 weeks, then I have a follow-up appointment October 6 and he seems confident that I should be able to start running again after that.

Thanks everyone for your advice on aqua jogging, I'll be doing lots of that, biking, and learning to swim! And volunteering for you runners.

Enjoy your runs!

A gorgeous day here in DC - perfect for running :(

Biked 5 miles to the office to meet up with my friend and co-worker Diego, Venezuelan guy who has become one of my best friends in the area and I love him like a brother. He was having trouble with his bike, so I took it to my bicycle maintenance class last week and fixed it myself! Changed a derrailour cable and moved a few things around that were misplaced and put some lube on his chain. We biked 10 miles to Carderock on the C&O Canal and 10 miles back. We were going SUPER slow but he's not in good shape, so as I was cruising about he was huffing and puffing and sweating behind... but we had a good time, talked a lot mainly about relationships (he recently broke up with his girlfriend so I'm acting as his therapist) and his best friend has a big crush on me so he was telling me how to handle it since I'm not interested in him... Aaaanyway, we biked back to the office, got some food, and I biked back home for 30 nice miles for the day. At least I managed to get outside on such a nice day.

I'll be taking the day completely off tomorrow and back to aqua jogging and biking during the week, and hopefully will find a coach to learn to swim freestyle, since I got some referrals.

Happy running!

45 minutes of pool running, couldn't take any more than that... I was able to get my cardio up to 120, I think.... I'm getting a hold of it the more I do it. I tried to do it without the aqua belt once, like Jeff (I think) does it, but man that was just impossible!!! Then I biked to work and a little more, 45 minutes on the bike and it's windy so the workout wasn't too bad... but considering that the past 2 days I've been eating like a pig (my roommate cooked and she had THREE desserts leftover... THREE DESSERTS!!!)... Then this week is restaurant week here in DC - most of the expensive, fancy restaurants in the city have a fixed menu of three courses for $35... so I went with friends last night to Mie N Yu... sooooo good!

As I passed runners on my bike on the way to work this morning I wanted to be them so bad!!! I wanted to scream "I'm one of you! Really, I'm a runner too, don't look at me as if you were better than me!" Hahahah...

A friend is going to hook me up with a free 2-week trial for a gym close to work, so hopefully I'll get my heart rate up on the stationary bike soon...

Also, I signed up to volunteer for one of the Ragnar relay race teams here in DC - it's September 27, from Cumberland to DC, mostly on the C&O Canal, I think. Should be fun!

Happy running!

Felt a sore throat this morning as I woke up so decided to sleep instead of going to the swimming pool... Biked to work, biked to my therapist at lunch, biked back to work, biked to the swimming pool, aqua jogged for 45 minutes, biked home.

Another sleepless night last night... tonight I'll have to resort to pills... Tylenol PM or something...

Biked to the pool this morning, did a 15-minute breast stroke warm-up, then 30 min aquajogging, then 15 minutes breast stroke. I did a few laps without the aquabelt. Holy cow it is HARD! I can only get to 1/2 the pool length, then float a little and then keep going... I was able to get my heart rate up to 120-130 but that's about it... plan is to join gym this evening - must do more cardio work!

Went on a one-hour bike ride with the Luna girls last night, prompted by a tip by the talented fellow fastrunningblogger Jill - thanks for the tip Jill! Girl's night was great! Got lots of free stuff and a self-defense class. Then came back to the office and after a quick shower I was ready for a dinner date :)  I figured since most bloggers are married they may get a kick out of reading about the dating life of a girl living in DC. The one thing that I know now for sure, that took me a long time to figure out, is that my significant other has to be somewhat athletic and/or like the outdoors! The guy I went to dinner with last night, whose nickname is "pink cowboy" because he was jokingly wearing a pink cowboy hat at the barbeque where we met, not only is a runner but he pretty much runs exactly my pace. The food was delicious and we had a great time - one of those nights you wish never ended, with the waiters waiting for you to leave to close the restaurant.

I managed to get up early this morning after not much sleep for one hour in the swimming pool: 15 minutes breast stroke, 30 minutes aqua jogging (including some "intervals" without the aquabelt), then 15 more minutes breast stroke.

After work I'm going on another slow bike ride with my co-worker Diego. He's one of those that I call "social exerciser" - he never does any exercise unless it's with other people. So it feels good to know I'm helping him out be healthier.

Fast 9-ish biking miles from home to Ballston, then 1.5 hours slow with my friend Sangeeta - she hasn't biked in a long time but enjoyed herself tons! It's great to have new biking friends - weird thing is, they don't exercise on their own... another "social exerciser". I'm trying to set her up with Diego so they can be work-out buddies... hehehe... shhhhhhhh they don't know it yet.

In the evening I went to a Raven's football game - my very first football game ever, it was fun. But the best part is, after the game they showed the men's swim relay where Phelps and the US swim team won the gold - it was great to watch that in a full stadium and on the big screens. Lots of fun.

Pool jogging and swim lesson tomorrow!

A beautiful day here in DC - after very little sleep last night (darn those olympics!) biked to the swimming pool, did some pool jogging before meeting my new swimming coach! Our first class went pretty well, I think, and I committed to 6 more lessons throughout this next few weeks. It's not going to be easy, but I think I can manage to learn freestyle... or so I hope...

Smelling like chlorine and with green hair, I met fastboy Aaron after his 15-mile long run for some crepes at Eastern Market, a walk around the neighborhood and some good conversation. We are kindred spirits in a sense: mountain people trying to escape the dreaded city life of DC, though he has a much clearer escape plan than I do.

Did some yoga at home when I got back, then watched some Olympics while making some cherry garcia ice cream with fresh Eastern Market cherries... YUMMM!

The plan for this week: keep up with the cross-training. I don't think I'll be joining a gym after all, since I'll be doing my cardio workout swimming (and spending lots of $$ on swimming lessons...). The plan is also to get more sleep - starting... nnnnnnnnow!

A bit of a lazy day... which is funny, cause I still exercised a lot more than the average American (or Argentinean alike). Biked to work in the morning, then after work biked to Alexandria to try and find a swimming suit (ended up buying one that is too small... ugh...) then biked back home. It was a nice ride, the way there is a straight shot on the Mt. Vernon trail, a bike/jogging trail right next to the Potomac. The way back was the same way, then cross over on the 395 bridge, cut through the Waterfront and all the way down M street by the brand new National's baseball stadium. 18 miles of biking for the day.

I was going to do some core work but decided to watch the Olympics and eat too much food instead. Not very wise.

10 min aqua jogging this morning, followed by a kick-butte (yes, I said butte) swimming lesson. Learning to swim freestyle for a 30-year old grown up is going to be a lot harder than I thought, but this was only my 2nd lesson so I shouldn't get ahead of myself. I just can't seem to get the breathing right, I feel like I'm out of breath every few seconds, and feel soooo clumsy in the water! It'll get better, I know it... The plan is to go back this afternoon after work for another hour. Biked to work.

So now my hair is not so smelly but my nails look terribly yellow! If it's not one thing it's the other. My swimming coach was telling me that he is training for a triathlon, but that his favorite are duathlons, with only swimming and biking - he wishes there were more of that available cause his weakest skill is running. I was like... What???? So maybe when I can start running I can help him out! I mean, after swimming, running is a piece of cake!

Biked to work, biked to Courthouse after work to work out with my friend Duygu at her apartment's gym. Used the stationary bike and the elliptical, felt pretty good. Duygu is trying to lose some weight but is not very good at keeping focused on the gym... so I want to think that I helped her out a little. She was on the bike texting her friends so she was going really slow, so every few minutes I'd tell her to focus for one minute and work out at maximum effort... She said it helped her... and I got to use a gym for free!

Now I can't sleep..... again....

What a perfect morning! If only I had gotten more sleep last night... but oh well...

Biked to the pool, swam for 30 minutes (I think I'm getting better!), jogged for 30 minutes (I'm getting better here too, now I can do a few laps without the aquabelt without feeling like I'm going to die), biked to work, and logged into my computer to find out the women's Argentine field hockey team beat Germany and won the bronze medal! Goooo girls! Now it's the men's basketball semifinal with my two favorite countries, Argentina vs. USA! Yikes...

I completely forgot to buy a swimming cap, and my hair is getting pretty bad... ughhhh... I'm going to a concert tonight and my date is going to be horrified :)

Best of luck to all my beloved Utah bloggers out there who are running a certain half marathon tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you all!

Biked to the office, then met a friend for a 20-mile bike ride on the C&O Canal - we went pretty fast considering he hadn't biked in a long time. Came back to Georgetown and had some pizza... and he talked me into having some ice cream... Who can say no to ice cream? Biked home after that for a total of 30 bike miles for the day.

Now I'm home watching the Olympic marathon runners, man those guys are fast! They just showed the Athens marathon race in which the Brazilian front-runner was attacked by a crazy priest and ended up finishing 3rd. Unbelievable! I had no idea that had happened - I guess four years ago I wasn't as into running as now. Poor guy. He seemed to have a good attitude about it - the Brazilian guy... the crazy Irish guy keeps doing crazy things and apparently they can't imprison him.

The Argentine kids got the soccer gold medal!!! That's the second gold for Argentina in this Olympics; the first one was a cycling event and a very impressive win. We also had a judo and a field hockey bronze, and the Basketball team has a chance to another bronze tomorrow.

WAY TO GO TO ALL THE UTAH RUNNERS on the two halfs you ran this weekend! Big thanks to Wall-e for running a spectacular half even when he was having some aches and pains during the week, and everyone please send good vibes to the great Jillzo who is running the hilly Anapolis 10-miler tomorrow! GOOOO JILL!

Last night we had a gorgeous sunset here in DC - some clouds, a bit windy, so beautiful I had to stop in the middle of my bike ride home to remind some fellow DCers to make sure they didn't miss the sky at that moment.

Today is just as beautiful. I rode my bike to the office, then to the Georgetown swimming pool (it's a small outdoor pool but everyone there was sunbathing, not many people were swimming, so me and my coach didn't have trouble finding room to swim. I am getting SO much better! I did 10 laps, then he began to teach me the flip turn (HARD!!!!) and he tested how long I could keep my breath under water - I was able to hold it for 1 full minute. David Blaine here I come! :)

I'm eagerly awaiting for Jill to post her Annapolis ten miler results - It is very hot for a race, and humid, plus I hear the course is super hilly! But we all know she's one tough cookie!

I hope everyone in Utah that run several half marathons and full ones is getting some well-deserved rest and food!

43 days till I can run again! That's 43 days to improve my lung capacity, my freestyle stroke, and everything in between! My goals for this week are to continue to exercise at least two hours a day, either swimming, aqua jogging or biking.

Too tired to get up early and go to the pool... but I managed to do 30 minutes of a yoga workout with Denise Austin. Then I biked to work, after work biked to the pool, swam for 45 mins, aqua jogged for about 30, and biked home.

Getting up this morning was TOUGH!!! But I did it... One hour in the pool, 30 mins swimming 30 mins aqua jogging. My silicone cap is working out well (my hair thanks you, Marion!).

I won't be able to work out any more this afternoon as I'll be going to Wolf Trap again for an 80's one-hit-wonder bands concert - Who remembers The Human League's "Don't you want me baby", or Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a place out there" and many others - should be a blast!  Oh, and I forgot to mention, Flock of the Seagulls will be playing "I ran (so far away)" - YUPPPEEEEE!

This is a special report from fast-80's-dancing-blog.com!

My friends and I went to the Regeneration Tour at Wolf Trap last night - Five 80's bands under one roof for one night! It was a fabulous time. The highlight of the night was Flock of the Seagull's "And I ran (so far away)" Everyone stood up and was jumping and dancing around. Yes, that was probably great for my stress fracture... I couldn't help but to think to myself: "You don't run far away! My fellow bloggers and *I* run far away!" Hahahaha!

Other hits: Naked Eye's "Promises, promises" and "Always something there to remind me", The Human League "Don't you want me baby", and Belinda Carlisle "Heaven is a place on earth". Some people were properly equipped with 80's hair, clothes, and makeup.

Fun times! I got home late so I didn't wake up to go to the pool this morning.

Then after work I was pulled into a happy hour... and stayed there having fun with co-workers for too long... no pool but I did bike back home. My only exercise of the day was bike to work and back. LAME!

More morning laziness...

Biked to work and to the swimming pool - swam for 45 minutes and jogged for 30 minutes. Took a 2-mile walk with a friend around the Congressional Cemetery.

The swimming session was good, I'm getting a lot better, but still can't master the flip turn. The jogging is getting better too, I can do it without the aqua belt for a lot longer now!

Lazy lazy lazy... Got up at 6 when my alarm went off, fed my cat, put on my swimming suit... and realized I was just too tired. So I went back to bed.

Metroed to work too, NOT because it's raining but because I have plans after work so I won't be able to bike back home. I can't remember the last day that I didn't do ANY exercise at all, no biking, no swimming, no running, not even walking. But this weekend I should be able to swim in the ocean, and cheer for my friends doing the VA Beach half marathon!

My friend Chris and his mom picked me up around 11 am to head down to VA Beach. The drive was long but not too bad. We picked up the race packets and checked out the expo, then they dropped me off by the hotel where I was staying with Rebecca and took off to their hotel. I went down to the beach and did some swimming and aqua jogging - it's easy in the salt water cause you float naturally! Had some dinner and went to sleep.

Woke up at the crack of dawn to meet Chris's mom. Walked on the beach a little towards the 1/2 marathon course, to meet Chris and Rebecca along as they were running. We saw them at mile 1, then at mile 10, where we waited for about 1 hour listening to a fabulous band play great songs from Journey, the B-52s, Madonna, and many others. It was a blast, we were singing and dancing all along. Chris finished in 2:01 and Rebecca in 1:49. Everyone agreed that the humidity was brutal, so they were both disappointed with their times. And since I've never done a flat 1/2 marathon, I kept wondering what my time would've been. Sigh...

Went swimming in the ocean afterwards, then Chris and his mom took off to the outer banks where they're spending the rest of the week, and I to dinner with Rebecca, her wonderful family, and with them to the B-52s concert which was FABULOUS! We danced (well, jumped around) all night long. Then to bed early.
