I miss my bike!!! Metroed to the gym in the morning, did 1 hour elliptical and 15 mins. core work and weights.

One of my favorite singers is coming to town in a few weeks, I can't wait! His name is Ben Kweller, and he has a son called "Run" that's pretty catchy - you can listen to it here: http://www.metrolyrics.com/run-lyrics-ben-kweller.html

Here are the lyrics:

Over hills
Over dales
I'll run with you
If it works
If it fails
I'll run with you

Since fifteen
I have ran
Everywhere
You can run
But together is much better
So let's run let's run let's run

Empty hands
Tired feet
I run with you
On the sand
Over concrete
I run with you

Since fifteen
I have ran
Everywhere you can run
But with you
It's much more fun
So let's run let's run let's run

It doesn't matter that they say we'll never make it
It's so strong that nothing can ever break it
You and I can tackle anything of any size
All anyone can ever want is a co-pilot
Someone to leave this town and
Up and start a secret
And when you sleep at night
I'll kiss you right between your eyes

Over hills, over dales
I run with you
Down the mountain
Through the trails
I run with you

Since I was fifteen
I have ran
Everywhere you can run
I'm not done with my traveling
So let's run let's run let's run
I'm not done with my traveling
So let's run let's run let's run
I'm not done with my traveling
So let's run let's run let's run

Let's see... what did I do, what did I do... Oh yeah - woke up early and metroed to the gym, did 1 hr elliptical and 15 min. core work and weights. After work, I went to pick up my bike - 2 miles of super fast walking from the metro to the shop, to make sure I made it in time before they closed! Picked up my bike (reunited, and it feels so good!), and biked the 2 miles back to the metro station (it was dark and I didn't have my helmet so I didn't want to ride all the way back home). At the bike shop I picked up a very expensive light that I hope will help me see better when I bike in the dark so I don't get in an accident, some fenders so I don't get so dirty when I ride in the rain, and some other stuff. Unfortunately, on the ride back to the metro I realized I need a new crankset... ouch, that's going to be expensive! I had them change the chain only because I thought the crankset would be OK, but I was wrong! I need to take better care of the chain from now on, since I've been riding it a lot lately.

Day 3 of focusing on nutrition (yesterday) wasn't so good. Day 4 was a little better, but not great. I'm craving eggs and beans, which I think means I need to increase my protein intake... and I need to eat before I'm super hungry. I read this article http://loveyourbody.nowfoundation.org/factsheet3.html and it made me think. I have some habits of several of those "disorders", but none really to an extreme, so maybe that means I'm pretty much normal for a woman... The night eating disorder is definitely the one that jumps at me the most, and I've known it's a problem for me for a while, and consciously try to eat more calories earlier in the day, which really helps. I'm lucky to work close to a pretty good supermarket, and that my office building has plenty of space to store food, so I can just buy stuff and keep it here to eat in the morning, so I don't have to haul it around from home on my bike all the time.

Last but not least, BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE RUNNING THE ST. GEORGE MARATHON!!!! I'll be sending happy thoughts for you, and looking forward to reading your reports so please post them quickly if you can!

On the Fourth day till running

Feeling tired, lots to do in the house. Biked to Crystal City in the morning to pick up the Army Ten Miler package, which I couldn't use, including an upgrade t-shirt that is the smallest Medium size I've ever seen. So sad.

Woke up at 6:40 on my own, after my alarm clock failed! I thought I'd be late, so I biked as fast as I possibly could to the Lincoln Memorial to meet up with Ashley, who ran 10 miles to the Army Ten Miler start line to do the race, as part of a 20 mile run before MCM. I made it there before her, and biked by her side, to make sure she made it. Then biked home; about 10 miles total.

Later, I biked from home to Mt. Vernon and back. That's about 40 long and hard miles. I was going super FAST, passing EVERYONE on the way. I like passing the hard-core bikers on their road bikes with my clumsy hybrid. It was cool, but I'm really pooped.

It was so fun and exciting reading everyone's race reports from St. George and Twin Cities! I am so happy for everyone who did so well in such difficult conditions! We have such amazing runners on this blog!

TOMORROW I CAN RUN!!!!!

The doctor cleared me to run again! HAPPY HAPPY, JOY, JOY!

They took an X-ray of my leg and he showed me the new bone was forming. It's interesting: he told me the actual stress fracture wouldn't show on an X-ray, and that's why they order a bone scan. However, once the bone is healed, an X-ray shows the recovery and new bone forming.

Also some coaches told me that I absolutely had to find out how I got the fracture: bad shoes, maybe I need orthotics, bad form, or overuse. But my doctor told me there's really no way to tell, that stress fractures do happen even if you train properly, have the proper nutrition and shoes, etc. It makes sense to me. Still, since when I first started feeling the pain I was just starting to wear new Saucony's with Superfeet insoles, I decided not to wear those shoes and inserts again and stick with my good old Asics. I'm going to pick up a new pair soon to celebrate my return to running.

Of course I brought my clothes and will go for a run after work in the park today, starting slowly, 3 min. run/2 min walk for about 30 minutes - I can't wait!!!

Thank you SO MUCH to all of you bloggers who kept on encouraging me and putting up with me during these past dreadful 8 weeks. You really kept me in check and motivated. THANK YOU!!!

---------------

Alright... and off I went! 3.5 miles in 40 minutes. Ran for 4-5 minutes, walked for 2-3 in between... I must say, it was easier than I thought it would be (to run really slow and take walking breaks)... meaning, I'm not in as good a shape as I thought... I could really feel my quads and my breathing wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, even after the 50 biking miles yesterday... So, a slow re-entry it will be indeed... It felt so good to be out there and enjoy a bit of the beautiful DC weather though! I love fall!

Lazy day, feeling a bit down and overwhelmed. Biked to work (5 miles), biked about 9 miles at lunch with a friend, stayed at work waaaay too late, and biked home.

This song was in my head, and I was the crazy lady singing out loud:

October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?
October
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on
And on....

Too much to do around the house before going to work - I'm leaving for Boston and Maine this afternoon, to visit an old friend and camp/hike Acadia National Park - I've never been there and I'm sooooo excited! I won't run tonight but will probably take a walk around Boston, and hope to run tomorrow morning before hitting the road. Back on Tuesday! Have a great weekend everyone!

Ps. Random fact about Columbus day - in Argentina, they call it "Dia de la Raza" (Day of the Races, race as in heritage/background, not as in running races) - they want to emphasize the fact that the European race and the Aboriginals "met" around that date.

Three easy miles on a beautiful morning in a great neighborhood in Boston! I got here last night and went for a short run this morning before packing up and driving up to Acadia National Park! Can you say FUN???

Drove to Acadia NP, went for a short walk around the beautiful campsite. It's so gorgeous here, the weather was perfect!

I've now officially been to 38 states, in a bit less than 10 years in the U.S.!

Hiked about 5 miles, some very rocky difficult terrain up here (Acadia Mountain loop). I got frustrated with my friend Ivan for being too slow - I was really trying to go as slow as I possibly could, but can't compete with a guy walking around looking up at all times with his hands in his pockets! So we made a deal: I'd go as slow as I possibly could if he tried to pick up his pace a little... it worked for a little bit, but then surely enough he stepped the wrong way down a rock and twisted his ankle really bad. Poor guy, I felt horrible... but.... i have to admit, I was a little glad inside, planning all the miles I'd do the next day, since he wasn't going to be able to hike. I know, I'm bad. I'm going straight down to hell... BUT, I also know that deep inside HE was also happy that the pressure was off for him to do any hiking the next day, and he would be able to do whatever he wanted (which was our agreement from the beginning anyway, he just wanted to hike with me to be nice and so I wouldn't be alone). Anyway... we made it back to the car and to the campsite, he iced his ankle, we made some good food, a nice fire, and went off to sleep.

I cannot tell you how gorgeous Acadia NP is. I'll post some pics soon. I was wowed. Wow.

WHAT A DAY!!!! Ivan dropped me off at one end of the park, and we agreed he'd pick me up at the other end. He went off to wonder into the town to get food to make me dinner, as I went off for a speed-hiking/trail running all over. I think he was happy, and I was definitely happy. We are good friends and had agreed beforehand that since we don't have the same interests, we would each do our own thing most of the time anyway, so we could both have a good time and enjoy the park that we both have been wanting to see for some time.

The hike/run was a magical experience. The views, the colors, the rocks, the lakes, the ocean, the island, the blue sky, everything was just absolutely perfect. I wanted to cry. I felt God's presence all over the place. I'm no longer a religious person who goes to church (though I was raised very Catholic), but I certainly am someone that experiences God's presence in every aspect of my life. With every step, with every view, I kept thinking "Thank you God for my legs. Thank you for my knees. Thank you for my eyesight, for allowing me to see the beauty that you laid out for us." I could hardly breathe of how happy I felt. I ran whenever I could (the terrain is super-duper rocky up there), and hiked the rest. I passed EVERYONE around. Not one soul passed me. I know some people think you can't enjoy the land when you go fast, but I disagree - you can totally do both! I don't need to stop to enjoy myself.

As I passed a couple hiking with a baby and chit-chatted, the guy asked me where I was from. When I said Argentina, he told me Jorge Luis Borges was one of his favorite authors. What a great thing to hear! I was expecting he'd say something about soccer, about the economy, about Evita Peron... but I just love it when people tell me about Borges, our Argentine gem in the international literature, and one of my favorites as well (not an easy author to read in case you were wondering...)

Ivan picked me up at the place and time agreed upon, we went back to the campsite and he made a fire and cooked some great dinner.

I found myself thinking something that every once in a while, when I feel lonely especially, I wonder: could I be with someone that doesn't like to hike/run/enjoy the wilderness? Could I just trail run and hike by my self some weekends, go camping alone, and come home to a significant other that enjoys staying home and read, cook, and then enjoy a meal together at dinner time? Even though I enjoy hiking and being outdoors on my own, it's such a big part of who I am, that I think the answer is no. In a relationship it's important to have "your own things", but some things you just need to have in common with your partner, and to me, hiking and enjoying the wilderness is a big one. I can run, bike, swim on my own... Relationships are all about compromise, but there are some things that are non-negotiable.

Thoughts?

Last night it rained a little, but by the morning all was almost cleared. We made breakfast and hit the road - Hiked a couple of miles on the way and walked to dinner in Boston. My legs definitely feel the 12 miles from yesterday, and my ankles too, but it feels so great! I am so sad to be leaving this beautiful place. I have to come back sometime. If you haven't seen Acadia National Park and have a chance to get here, don't hesitate and do it. You won't be disappointed. Pictures coming soon!

Calling all bloggers! Please keep this banged-up rocket in your prayers. I had a bit of a fender bender riding my bike this afternoon, fell, broke my jaw in two places, got 6 stitches on a cut, and chipped a couple of teeth. I'm at home and doing alright, but need to follow up with a specialist to make sure I don't need surgery to fix the jaw. I appreciate your sending good thoughts my way! Happy running!

What a gorgeous crisp Auttumn morning here in Capitol Hill! The birds are singing, the trees are turning orange/yellow, my house smells like flowers, my cat is cuddling next to me, and my breath stinks :)

I'm feeling well, just some discomfort from the braces/dirty mouth, so I didn't sleep that well. Woke up around 5 and took some more of the pain medicine to help me sleep.

Ok, so here's an update:
Pounds lost since the accident: about 7
Today's weight: 141.5 lbs.
Number of inches my butt has fallen since I haven't exercised since Sunday: about 10
Number of minutes Lucia will walk/do strengthening exercises for today: 60

Have a great day runners!!! Thank you for your support! I'll be out and about before you know it!

Feeling good, people! Went to work this morning and saw my friend Paul outside the metro - "I would recognize that chin anywhere" he said as he smiled and gave a sympathetic hug. Everyone at work was also super nice, and I have more flowers than I have room for. Feeling the love!

Went to the doc that afternoon to get stitches removed - chin is looking better.

The highlight of the day: a visit from fellow blogger and all-around-great guy Aaron! Now, the resemblance between Aaron and Pepper is pretty hard to believe. As soon as I opened the door, Aaron gave me a puppy look! It was pretty funny.

There's so much commotion in the city due to the Marine Corps marathon, I'm so sad I can't run it! But I'll be out there cheering on all runners, especially our fellow bloggers Aaron and Jillzo! You guys are going to rock the planet, and I'll be out there cheering you on in silence, with my purple wig and my cowbell! GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!

GOOOOOOOO JILLZO!!!! GOOOOOOOOOO AARON!!!!

That's what I wanted to say today at the MCM course today!

I went out cheering with my friend Jenny - we were wearing ridiculous purple and blue wigs (photos coming) - I had a cowbell, and she had her voice. The wigs were a hit! Everyone loved them! Hint: next time you go cheering for marathoners, wear a ridiculous wig! That'll put a smile on the runner's face for sure.

I was so sad to miss Aaron, it seems the phone alerts were waaaay off and he was running waaaay fast and ahead of me. At the last minute I got a request from a friend to hand him a banana at around mile 10, and some gu at around mile 20, so I had to follow him around and therefore missed Aaron. He is such a STUD and finished in like 3:40 something. GO AARON!!!!

Jillzo was looking fabulously beautiful as always and I was able to snap a few GORGEOUS pictures of her - I'll see if I can get her permission to post them. I saw her by the 14th St bridge, where, coincidentally, I had my bicycle accident exactly a week ago :(

I had so much fun cheering, even when I couldn't talk - just smiling and looking at the runners in the eye I think makes them understand you're supporting them and maybe feel better? I hope so.

CONGRATULATIONS Jill and Aaron - you both rock!!!

Hellowwww everybody,

I had my follow-up appointment with the surgeon this morning. The good news is, the bone is healing well. The bad news is, the wires have to stay on for three more weeks, so 4 weeks total... probably... he didn't want to give me hope but I could tell that if all goes well, he may be taking them off earlier. But, as long as they help me heal better, I don't mind having them on. He said he rather not have me running and biking outside, that he doesn't want me to fall... so he suggested I do stationary bike and maybe some treadmill... we'll see, maybe in a few weeks I'll still go outside and just be very careful. I rarely fall during running anyway.

Here are some pics of our beautiful Jillzo during the race, and of yours truly cheering on the runners:

YES I CAN!!! YES I CAN!!! I can run on the treadmill!!! I can run and exercise with a bunch of metal and wires in my mouth!!! Hooray!!!

Went to the gym after work and did 30 min on the elliptical, 25 minutes of run/walk on the treadmill, and some weights. The treadmill made me a little dizzy but it wasn't too bad... I really think if I continue training, I'll be able to run a marathon in February and qualify for Boston...  we shall see... let's not get ahead of ourselves, but I'm very happy to be able to exercise and feel good.

Morning weight: 140. Come onnnnn 130's... !!!!! I must say, I thought I'd lose a lot more weight with these liquid diet, but I'm glad I didn't - it's not healthy to lose weight too fast. I've been very good with my eating - lots of fruit smoothies and liquified bean or lentil soup, so I can get a lot of protein and fiber. It's very frustrating because everything gets in my teeth and clogs them, so the eating process is very slow, but I don't want to drink only juices or boost/ensure... i think real food is better...

Happy running!

The office closed early, so I was able to go for a run in the gorgeous fall afternoon on the C&O Canal to Fletcher's boathouse with my friend Trick, who I haven't seen in a long time. I had to run with my special scisors in case of an emergency to cut the wires of my mouth! It was fun running with Trick cause he is so shy and quiet - but this time he had to do all the talking, so he opened up to me a bit more than before. Felt great! Took some walking breaks just for precaution, but most of the time we were going at a good pace and I did the 6 miles in 1 hour.

Morning weight: 139!!! I am now at my pre-stress fracture weight. Yup, I gained 10 lbs after I stopped running, and now I lost them since the jaw fracture. I am NEVER going back to the 140s. NEVER. Did you hear that? Please hold me to it. I feel sooooo much better being less heavy. I still want to lose at least 9 more lbs, although 11 would be the absolute heavenly place, but at 130 lbs I know I would feel great. So why do I do this to myself and keep allowing myself to gain so much weight? I don't know. I'm an idiot. It's not just that I fit better on my clothes or that I look better when I see myself on the mirror, it's so much more, it's my confidence level that is better, it's my fitness, it's my not feeling subconscious about my huge butt bouncing around when I walk.

A bigggg shot out to our friend Wall-e who just had hernia surgery! Hang in there buddy, it'll all be better soon!

Gotta go hand out candy now, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
