Counting an 8-mile rocky, strenuous hike as 4 miles of running... went out to Shenandoah, did the White Oak Canyon/Cedar Creek loop. The colors are just undescribable. Went with my friend Brian, who even though he's lived in this area for a long time, hasn't done much hiking in those trails. It's weird how sometimes people don't explore the area where they live... I must say, I've lived in a lot of places in the U.S. and I have explored the surroundings as much as I possibly could - although I probably don't take advantage of all the great museum exhibits we get here in town.

The day was just beautiful, the leaves are either at peak or a bit past peak, and we even jumped into The Slide - we were told the water in the pool was 46 degrees!

Six easy miles down East Capitol, to the Mall and back up. Another beautiful, cloudy day. Trees are gorgeous and I felt great - hamstrings a bit tight.

I know I shouldn't have ran two days in a row... but it's so nice out, and my co-worker wanted to go, so I couldn't say no. Felt great, went at good pace, out on the Rosslyn bridge and back on the Memorial Bridge. I brought my scissors this time!!!

Did my very first spin class ever after work - 45 minutes, it was so hard, I thought I was going to faint like this:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we9_CdNPuJg

A rainy yet lovely DC evening - ran in the dark along the C&O canal towpath... forgot my scissors... not smart - and not smart to run in the dark on my condition either, but hey, Wall-e is not running for me anymore so I had to get out there! Felt good - went slow for the first 4 miles, picked up the pace on mile 4 and slowed down the last one.

When I was changing into my running clothes I found something I hadn't seen in a very very long time: MY ABBS!!! I actually have abdominal muscles, I thought they were gone but they were just hiding behind layers and layers of fat! :)

Very happy to live in a country where elections can go smoothly and people's votes count! I voted for the first time in the U.S. today. It was very exciting, though I had to wait in line for 2 hours...

Do you realize how many people in the world don't have that? Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, living in democracy is a gift - don't take it for granted!

Six very slow and sluggish miles on the C&O Canal at lunch. It is absolutely gorgeous out. Weather is perfect. Cloudy, colorful, just precious. Yet I felt very sluggish... I managed to pick up the pace for miles 4 and 5, barely keeping 8-minute miles. I don't expect to hit a PR on Sunday's Veteran's Day 10k, sadly... but there's the Jingle all the way 10k a day after my birthday (December 14) and we will see what a 31-year old Argentine girl can do then!

Six GLORIOUS miles along the National Mall, by the Potomac river, all the monuments, and up the Old Post Office Pavillion to pick up my race packet to Sunday's Veteran's Day 10k. Running on shorts and a tank top and feeling super hot - it is summer again down here! I was thinking of poor Marion and others in Utah running in the snow already... though I do like running in cold weather...

Team Roadbuilders only has 3 memeber for Sunday, unfortunately I couldn't get any of my co-workers to run the race. Lazy bums... I'm not sure how much my closed mouth is going to affect my speed - I can feel that I don't intake oxygen as easily with my mouth closed, plus this morning I had a bit of a congested nose... if it's not too cold, I should be OK breathing mostly through my nose. My friends Brian and Jenny are going to be running with me - Brian is fast but wants to stay with me and carry my scissors - so he will be my Scissor Boy! Jenny is a bit slower than us, but maybe since I'm running injured she'll be able to keep up with us. Jenny is thinking of running the Myrtle Beach marathon with me, since it's on her birthday. It will be awesome! Did I mention how much I love my running friends???

Wish me luck on Sunday and happy running!

Broken jaw + metal braces - 12 lbs. + awesome pacer = PR!!!!

My previous 10k PR was 48:20, and I ran 46:51 today. Hooray!

Wowowowowow! What else can I say? It is a gorgeous morning here in DC, not too cold, not too hot, probably about 50 degrees. I biked down to the tidal basin with my friend Brian, who graciously offered to stay with me the entire race. He coaches cross-country at a school near Manassas, so he knows a little about motivation... I was excited.

And off we went, and we hit the first mile at around 7:25, so I thought yikes, I should slow down... but then I thought, maybe I can keep up this pace? The second mile was just about that, and so was the third - and then I saw a hand coming at me and it was my friend John coming on the other side of the road giving me a high five, just the energy I needed. The fourth mile was a bit slower, around 7:40, then around mile 5 I started to get a bit tired - then Brian told me we were so close, that I should just focus on giving everything I had and try to pass one runner at a time... so I did - and just when I thought I had nothing left, I sprinted to the finish line.

It felt soooooo great to hit a PR on this conditions. A huge accomplishment.

After the race I saw my friends Chris and Brent - it's always so great to hang out and chat with other runners after a good race. They even had hot chocolate, so I was able to eat something!

It really was an awesome finish, only 11 days after starting to run again after my jaw surgery, and 3 weeks after my broken jaw accident. I think once the braces come off I'll be able to do great things!!!

Thank you all for your support and happy Sunday!

Another gorgeous day here in DC - a bit windy but so nice.
I'm back on my bike commute! Yeah! So I biked to work - and after work I ran home, six easy miles, a recovery jog you may say. The moon was up high, the wind was blowing, it was cold but not unbearable... just beautiful! Felt great except for a little pain on the bottom of my left foot - I think I need new shoes. Heck, I deserve them, don't I? :)

Walter, you were with me on that run, along with my other friend who just had hernia surgery! I tell you, it's not easy to run with all that weight from you guys on my shoulders!

Since my bike was at work, I ran to work, but I didn't want to push my luck (I'm probably already doing it by running every day), so I went the short way. I brought my crappy Timex gps and it said 4.5 miles and change - so mapmyrun.com is not far off at all! It's a gorgeous morning - one of those that make you feel lucky to be alive. My runs are so beautiful, straight down the mall with the Capitol on one side, the museums around, the Washington Monument straight ahead, the White House, the Watergate Hotel... I've been here for 4 years and still marvel of how lucky I am to be here. Wow. Wow!!!

I really, really, really wanted to run this morning... My alarm went off early cause I wanted to bike to the gym and do a spin class... but I didn't get up. I kept thinking I could just go for a short run and it'd be ok... but I knew I should'nt run every day... so I just biked to work and back home. The bike ride at night is a bit scary, but hey, I fell during the day and on an empty trail, so what's up with that, right?

A beautiful day in DC. Check out the view from my office window:

A rainy and cloudy day here in DC - still gorgeous and not too cold though. So I ran to work with my little Nathan pack. My right shin was hurting a little... please oh please shin splints don't come back!!! I'm going to cross-train tomorrow and run on trails on Saturday, and cross-train again on Sunday... must remember to take it easy and not run every day even though I really really want to! Oh, I got new shoes! Yeah baby yeah!

Nada... zero... zippo... Well, almost nothing... didn't do anything during the day - not feeling too well. The doctor cut the wires yesterday and replaced them with rubber bands. So now I can open my mouth a little bit. Let me tell you, after almost 4 weeks of not using your jaw muscles, opening your mouth feels like running a marathon! So I took some ibuprofen and felt better.

Tonight I went to see one of my favorite Argentine bands of all times to the state theatre: Los Enanitos Verdes (the green dwarves). They were un-be-lie-va-ble! Even though I couldn't sing out loud and scream as I wish I could have, I had a blast. I jumped higher than I thought I ever could.

Here are some pics of the concert (thank you Mike!), one with my friend The Razor (how's that for a nickname, Walter?)

A cold and windy day in DC - biked 34 miles with my friend Will, who had hernia surgery a few weeks ago, but felt well enough to bike a little. We biked 20 miles together, and then I biked 14 more to get home. Not too shabby for a lazy girl like me! The weeping willows were soooo pretty on my way back home, I had to stop and snap a photo for everyone to see. Here they go. (again, thanks Mike!)

Bad Lucia, Bad! Biked to work in the cool DC morning, but got a call from a friend from out of town to meet for dinner... so I failed to run in the evening or go to the gym. Not good. The worse part is, she was super late! I could've run 4 miles or gone to the gym for a few minutes if I had known she would be late. It is so disrespectful when people are late! I hate it hate it hate it! Ok, let's change the tone... happy, happy, joy, joy, happy, happy, joy, joy... It was good to see her anyway, and she's gone through A LOT in this past year. And I thought I had bad luck... She had to have back surgery twice (the first time didn't work) and then got gastric bypass because she had to lose weight fast and didn't have the will to do it the normal painful way like most of us... she had A LOT of complications from the gastric bypass surgery and ended up almost dying a couple of times. It's nice to see that she was able to overcome everything and she's looking good now, though she's still not exercising... some people just never learn... I'd pick an hour at the gym and eat a banana on the road to sitting down for dinner for an hour any time!

It feels soooo cold in here! It's nice and sunny though... 36 degrees...

It wasn't easy getting up early this morning but I did it! And ran to work, the semi-long way. My right shin hurt a little at times but seems OK. I'm just not going to run every day for the next week or so, and be very aggressive with the cross-training. Oh, and the ultimate healing celebration takes place this Friday: The Legwarmers, my favorite 80's cover band, is playing in Falls Church, and the doc says I can take the rubber bands off and only wear them at night starting Friday, so I should be able to sing along a little! Jillzo, Aaron, if you're around, it's a show you won't want to miss!!!

I'm going to bike home tonight. Didn't bring gym clothes but I WILL BE GOOD and do some strengthening/core exercises when I get home I WILL I WILL I WILL!

Shin doesn't feel right... contemplated running to work but biked instead - 27 freaking degrees outside, so cold! I'm going to a spin class after work, but felt like blogging about other stuff.

It's sort-of a sad day. A young guy friend of mine decided that after only 1 year of marriage, it's not working for him. Very sad. He's such a great guy and his wife is wonderful. They had what in my mind was the perfect American dream: both very young, good looking, educated, successful, they just bought a house together... so disappointing. Since I can't keep my mouth shut and I kept seeing him walk around the office teary-eyed, I asked if he wanted to take a walk and chat a bit. He knows I was married before, so I can offer my "what not to do" advice. We talked a while ago and one of the first things I said is "go to a counselor NOW" - cause I wish I had when me and my ex starting having trouble, instead of waiting for a long time. So they started going, but it seems that he's made up his mind and wants out. My thoughts: on one hand, if you already know you want out, get out now before it's too late and there are kids on the way, and you are both still young and re-building your lives won't be so hard. On the other hand, are you just bored with yourself and need to do something to keep you occupied, or is this about her particularly? Is this going to happen with every girl you meet and like, after the chase is over and you're set in a routine, you'll want to get out? Who knows... he seems to think it's the first. I hope they both figure things out and are happy in the long-run.

Continuing on relationship news, one of my best friends and co-worker is thinking of getting back with the girl he dated for a year. I guess that's good news, although he is really scared because she really hurt him and was very pushy about moving the relationship forward, but they are taking the right steps to healing, doing counseling both individually and as a couple, and may be very happy together in the future. He is one of my favorite people in this world, like an older brother to me, and I really, really want to see him happy.

Last but not least - I'm rehearsing the words in my head that I need to say tonight to possibly the nicest guy that has ever pursued me... this guy went above and beyond trying to get me to go out with him with flowers, teddy bears, books, running, hiking, biking, picnics, dinners, movies, and everything a guy can do right in a "courtship" to get the girl... He was so nice to me during my accident and all... but what's tough for me is figuring out if I like HIM or if I like the way he makes ME feel with all that. And I realized it's the second, and that's not enough for a relationship to develop further. I know it isn't really a big deal, but he seems like a very sensitive guy and I hate being the bearer of bad news... I'm sure he'll find a girl that appreciates him, someone smarter than me. Or maybe I'm just too closed-off and guarded to be in a relationship right now? I'd like to think I'm not - and he was just not the right guy for me.

Sorry, this was more of a diary entry than anything. But I figured it may be a nice distraction for all of you married people out there. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

-------

Ran from the office to the gym, 1 mile, did a 1-hour spin class, and ran 1 mile to the metro stop. Right shin bothers me a little... grrrrrrrrrrrr....

I made the nicest 36-year old man I know cry on the phone this evening. I'm going straight to hell.

A beautiful, cloudy and slightly windy morning in DC - 36 degrees outside. Perfect for a run to work. So I did. Woke up a bit late so I had to take the short route, but it was good cause I'm worried about my right shin. It hurt a bit but not too bad.

I'm wondering what muscles does a spin class work? Why don't I feel sore after a spin class? Or is it mostly the cardio that is exercised and not so much the muscles? I feel like I'm using the right tension... maybe since I bike so much my muscles are already worked up...

Went to the gym after work, ran 2 miles on the treadmill and did 30 minutes on the bike and some weights. Then showered and got ready for the Legwarmer's show!!! It was so much fun, I love 80's cover bands!

My co-worker Diego was told he has high cholesterol. So I said he should exercise more. He said, of course, "I don't have time". I said, what are you doing today after work? He said aren't we going to the Legwarmer's show? I said yes, but what about after work and before the show? He said he was meeting friends for drinks... aha! - so you have time, you just choose not to make it a priority! Once you make working out a priority, you find time to do it, even if it's a little bit a couple of times a week. Am I right or what? It just takes a little planning, and yes, sometimes in the morning I hate having to haul work shoes, running shoes, and workout clothes everywhere, but it's worth the trouble to be fit!

No running but walked about 4 miles with a friend down to the Congressional Botanical Gardens, where they have the best toy train/christmas village display in town, then walked over to the American History Museum which just re-opened, and my association sponsors a transportation exhibit that is very cool. Then walked home. A nice relaxing day.

Ran to the office to pick up my bike. A beautiful day!!! Soooo sunny! A friend picked me up from there and we drove to Leesburg to bike the last 15 miles of the W&OD trail. Sooooo pretty out there, I loved it! We were going very fast which I love, and I got to show off how strong of a biker I am. I really want to do a mountain bike race soon to test myself against other strong chicks. We biked 30 miles total, and I ran 4.5. Not a bad day!

Biked to work and will bike back home after work. Ran about 4.5 miles during lunchtime with Frank, a fast boy who just ran 3:13 at the San Antonio marathon and was kind enough to run with me to give me some advice. He agreed that I don't need to run 50-60 miles a week, so I think, provided my shin allows it, I'm going to attempt a 40-45 mile week, do some interval and hill training, and focus on having a good long run every weekend. Between that and some good cross-training, and after running a decently good time at my last 10k, I should be good to go. I'm planning on running a hilly 1/2 marathon December 6, and if my shin feels alright then, I'll be full speed with the training and sign up for Myrtle Beach.

Keep your fingers crossed for my shin!!! happy running my friends!

Happy running my friends! Watch this, laugh, and pass it on!

PM, did a spin class. This instructor had much better taste on music, and it was a hard class, but I didn't like it. She didn't mix things up enough for my taste. I liked the very first instructure I took a class with, because she told us at the beginning of every interval how long we'd stay there, and how hard she wanted us to go, like "3 minutes at 70%, then we increase resistance", so I know what's coming. The other two girls I've had as instructors would just spin around and yell "come on" "keep it up" "just a little more" and that's about it...

Biked home in the cold afterwards. Whenever I start feeling so special and cool for biking in the cold, I see another biker chick that looks cooler than  me. But I'm faster. And oh well, there are a few more cool people like me in DC, big deal. I bet they didn't break their jaws and biked themselves to the hospital afterwards, right???

Office closed early today! Hooray! A gorgeous day in DC - about 40 degrees outside, perfect for shorts and a long-sleeve shirt. I ran 1 mile to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce building where I used to work to meet with my friend Greg - gosh I am SO happy I don't work there anymore! Greg and I ran 4 miles around the White House and the Lincoln Memorial, then I dropped him off and ran 1 mile back to the office. Felt pretty good throughout but my shin is definitely hurting a bit.

I'm off to Shenandoah tomorrow to hike Old Rag mountain, one of the most popular hikes in the area that I never do except on Christmas or Thanksgiving cause it's so crowded. I'm taking my friend Roberto who isn't in very good shape, so it'll be a slow 8 mile hike, but fun and full of great views.

It's a very special Thanksgiving day for me - it's been a tough year in so many ways, but at the same time I feel so strong, and I've grown and learned so much about myself... and the people around me. I didn't achieve my goal of qualifying for Boston but that's going to make it a lot more special when I do. Sometimes it's the things that get away that help us most in life. And living the dream of qualifying for Boston through so many bloggers in here was so exciting, it made me realize how much I really want it.

Alright, enough blah-blah-blah. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day!

A fabulous (if slow) 8 mile hike with my friend The Razor, followed by a 2 mile brisk walk to catsit for my friend Marcella (mace in hand, the sad reality of our unsafe neighborhood, only a mile away from Congress).

Ohhh what a perfect day. Now I'm heading back home to eat all the leftover food my roommate made! Hooray! The photo below is from my run with Greg yesterday. Rocky pose, ha!

BEAUTIFUL day. 50 degrees outside. Put on my running shorts and biked over to the office - left bike there and hit the trails of Rock Creek Park. Sadly, there was a police note everywhere warning people about an attack that occurred November 27, a guy sexually attacked a girl runner... yikes... mace on-hand, no music, and all ears, I hit the trails. About 2 miles into it my right shin was hurting - but this felt definitely like shin splints. I got so mad and sad and disappointed and everything... I stopped, stretched, walked, ran, walked... and it was gone! So I kept on running.... ehem.... to this store that has some Argentine chocolates... I of course didn't get anything... ehem.... of course not.... and did NOT run back to the office with a bag full of chocolates.

Biked back home and went to a friend's get together where I ate leftover Thanksgiving food - too much of it...

WOW what a day! Another beautiful day, a bit chilly but sunny and so nice. Biked 5 miles to the office, where I met up with a friend and we biked 50 - that's right, 50 miles up to a lake in Rockville and back. It's my longest bike ride to date - 55 big miles in a day. Not too shabby for a mountain bike with hybrid tires, running shoes (no clipless pedals or bike shoes), and no seat padding or bike shorts padding at all - all natural Latino padding baby! We kept just blazing down the trail passing people, up and down the hilly trail. I really need to get clipless pedals or a road bike to see what those legs of mine can do... I'm thinking I may be a better bike rider than runner - Jillzo I need your help!

The coolest thing was when we arrived to the lake, we went up this long hill, and came up to this big field where some geeks were having some sort of battle re-enactment! It was like Lord of the Rings meets Braveheart. Definitely the most bizarre thing I've ever seen, and we arrived JUST as they were getting ready to start fighting - they had fake swords and stuff, but they took their fight seriously. I doubt many people with those interests live in the DC area, they probably came from pretty far away for this games.

Biked back home and my feet were FREEZING - I'm going to need to do something about that, cause I thought I was going to lose my toes to frostbite... But nothing that some hot chocolate and a nice fire couldn't fix. A great day overall.
