Biked from home to Ballston to pick up my friend Sangeeta and take her on a slow bike ride of her neighborhood - she is scared of biking... it's funny... I biked pretty fast on the Mt. Vernon trail, and tried to keep the momentum on the Custis trail but oh boy is it a hilly trail! I have to give kudos to Aaron for running on that trail so much, it really has some killer hills! After that I biked back to Roosevelt Island to meet a friend, we did some hiking around there and on the Potomac Heritage trail, it was such a beautiful day! Biked home after that - I probably biked about 25 miles and hiked 5 total. My quads were feeling it!

Tonight I'm getting my very first massage ever! The guy is also a coach, so he said he can help me plan my recovery phase. I look forward to it but I'm also scared - I'm not a big fan of strangers touching me, and I'm also very ticklish, which could make things interesting.

14 day people!!! 14 days!!!

Biked to the swimming pool, aqua jogged and ran in the shallow part of the pool for 50 minutes and swam for 10 minutes. One of the lifeguards twisted his ankle really bad coming down from the high chair and they had to call the paramedics, poor guy, his ankle was really in bad shape and he was in pain. I met a fast runner who was also jogging without an aqua belt, he races 5k's but he had a hip injury. It was nice to chat with someone, made the time go by faster.

After work, I went to Ballston to get a sports massage - my first massage ever. It was nice. The guy is also a certified coach and works exclusively with women. He made a plan for me to get back into running after my injury that starts me by running 1 minute and walking 2, and increasing the run time progressively... over 10 weeks!!! He has me running for 20 minutes after 10 weeks of going back into it!!! It's just crazy! I told him no way - and then he said ok, maybe since I've been doing other types of exercise I should start on week 5 of his plan, which means starting to run for 4 minutes and walking 1 minute, and increasing to 20 minutes in 5 weeks... still, I really think that is waaaaay too conservative. My thought was that I would be able to do a long run of 10 miles after 4 weeks... I really feel so strong, I haven't really had a lot of pain in my leg (nothing even close to unbearable) which makes me think the fracture was in the very beginning stages and not very serious, and I'm taking the maximum time off from running that they recommend, 8 weeks, and I've been cross-training like a fish! I'm going to look for other opinions... I may end up not doing the Phoenix RNR marathon in January though, and run Austin in February instead...

Here's what I think I should do... starting with 10 miles/week and increasing to 45 miles/week during 9 weeks.

Week of:  Running: Approx total weekly mileage
 (1) Oct 6 5 min run, 5 min walk, total 30 min running per day every other day, x-train all other days.   10
 (2) Oct 13 10 min run, 5 min walk, total 40 min running per day every other day, x-train all others  15
 (3) Oct 20 10 min run, 5 min walk for 1 hour every other day, x-train all other days  20
 (4) Oct 27  20 min run, 5 min walk for 1 hour, 4 days a week, x-train all others  25
 (5) Nov 3 10 min run, 1 min walk for 1 hour, 5 x week  30
 (6) Nov 10  No more walking breaks, run 5x week  32
 (7) Nov 17  same  35
 (8) Nov 24  same  40
 (9) Dec 1  Run every day  45

Biked to work, after work went to the gym for 1 hour on the elliptical, and on my way home I figured what the heck, I'm going to the swimming pool... I swam for 30 minutes, then I was aqua jogging and this guy came and asked me if I believed in coincidences - He was the same guy who was swimming in my lane a few weeks ago, and at one point stopped and said "keep your center of gravity up, so that your legs kick higher up"... I thanked him, as I'm always looking for feedback to be better, since I feel so clumsy when I swim. So yesterday, he told me he had used me as an example with his employees as he was coaching them, sort-of a "pay it forward" thing, how sometimes just being nice to people and helping them for no reason pays off. Anyway, we got to talking and it turns out, he lived in Buenos Aires for a few years, a long time ago. It's nice to make new friends in the pool! After that, I biked home. Went to bed pretty late but got some good sleep that I really needed.

12 days people! I want to start the song "The 12 days of running": here's the first verse - you have to help me over the next few days...

On the 12th day of running,
the bloggers said to me,
slow down, don't re-injure your shins!

On the 11th day till running
Lucia biked to work and back onl-eee
She was soooo laz-eeeee!

One of my wonderful friends is a high school teacher, and he helps train the cross-country team. He asked the school coaches about my injury, and how I should go about my recovery. Apparently, they all agree that running a marathon in January is too soon, and they even think February would be pushing it... I really feel that the injury was probably not too serious to begin with because I didn't have much pain, and that I'm very strong from all the cross-training, so that I can really do the one in Feburary. But, with so many people telling me that January is too soon, and as much as I really want to get to Phoenix to meet Wall-e, Misty, Shauna, and the rest of the gang, I'm going to have to pass and think about my longer-term health. Booo-hooo...

The high school coaches also suggested to find out from my doctor what was the cause of the injury. The first time I remember having pain in my shins, in both legs, was right after I started running with a new pair of Sauconys, so I wonder if that could be it. But, I really think I increased my mileage too fast. Maybe both.

As I mentioned, my friend is a high school teacher. He is always so positive and excited about his job, he's making me think about a teaching career again. That has always been in my mind, but when I decided to go to grad school and was thinking of either Economics or teaching, I went with Economics. It may not have been the best choice, as right now I'm starting to believe. In this town where everything is so dominated by politics, international development, etc., it's hard to "think outside the box" if you're not interested in that stuff.

Yesterday I went online and looked at schools back West that have Master's in Education degrees... Colorado State is a good possibility - I have a good friend living in Fort Collins that could make the move easier for me, and who is having some pretty serious health issues (he is unfortunately going blind from a degenerative disease, among other things) so I know he would benefit from having me around too. And, since Aaron and Pepper are going to be in nearby Denver, it's a no-brainer, right? :)

Ok, I was just bouncing out some interior thoughts there. Now back to work!

Austin Marathon, February 15, 2009, here I come!

Biked to work in the morning, before the rain started - walked to the gym and did 1 hour in the elliptical, non-stop! Felt pretty good - no pain in the legs at all. Then I went to meet with the 12 Squirrels Gone Wild, the Ragnar Relay team I'll be volunteering for this Saturday. Pretty cool group of people - it's hard to go wrong with runners!

On the 10th day till running
Lucia went to the gym,
worked out, and sweated like a piiiig!

The highlight of the day: lunch with the one and only Jillzo, Jillzo from the Blog!

1.5 hours at the gym after work tonight - 1 hour on the elliptical, 15 mins in the bike, and 15 mins doing strength/core work.

I was looking at other people's machines when I was on the elliptical, and everyone's heart rate was a lot lower than mine! I wonder if I'm pushing myself too much, and should train in the recommended fat burning zone instead... it just feels like I'm barely doing any work when I'm in that zone! I don't even sweat! I'll have to read more about it...

It's raining here... after the gym, I got on my bike thinking I'd bike home on the rain... but forgot I had switched to hybrid tires and didn't have my mountain bike tires - not a lot of traction with water. So, down I went - thankfully, the street wasn't busy so I didn't get hurt too bad - just a very bloody knee and a lot of pride hurt. So, I metroed home with my bike.

On the 9th day till running
Lucia's bike played a trick
she fell down on the streeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Volunteered to set up the finish line of the Ragnar Relay in Crystal City - then staffed the first aid tent , but as expected, nobody had any injuries/troubles, so I was able to chat with runners and chill. Nada mas. My knee hurts from the fall, hopefully it's not injured...
